On 12th September, the new Association of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus in Angola was founded. IF was represented in Angola by IF board member Luis Quaresma from Portugal. He reports: “By the invitation of Dr. Mayanda Inocente, I've been present at the ceremony where this new association was officially created. They start with the hope that can resolve the serious problems that exist in this country for the people who live with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and their families.”
Although they try everything they can, health professionals and the responsible officials cannot respond to 250 children who are waiting for a shunt.
With the preconditions they face, the teams of Dr. Mayanda and Dr. David Bernardino at Hospital Pediatrico de Luanda can't insert more than 1 shunt per month. This situation becomes dramatic due the huge need. The newly created association has the hope that Portugal and the international community can help to save the life of these children.
Mr Quaresma adds: “the Portuguese Association fpr Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (ASBIHP), of which I am the president, can guarantee to be with the young association in everything possible and International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (IF) welcomes the new association. Together we can contribute to more efficient work in the task to increase the number of Angolan children with access to treatment and access to a life with quality.”
