PRACTICAL DETAILS IF–FFI MEETING ON PREVENTION

OVERVIEW
Flour fortification in Europe is lagging well behind the rest of the world and European countries have a high burden of preventable neural tube defects and iron deficiency damage especially to women and children. To turn this meeting into a success very important leaders from Europe from various communities are coming together. This includes leaders from medical and public health science, industry, the disability community, government food regulators, and international institutions such as the UN and the EU (DG SANCO). We have identified people from these sectors from several EU countries including Ireland, UK, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands and Italy, who are actively already engaged in trying to move the matter forward in their countries. A few key resource people from the US will also attend (especially from the CDC - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Alan Court, Director of the Program Division of UNICEF and Vice Chair of FFI along with Pierre Mertens, IF President will give the challenge and opening remarks at the meeting.
